The newly opened Bike Arrival Station at Clayton has been dedicated to the memory of James Gormley, the former Transport Officer with The Office of Environmental Sustainability who died in the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

James' mother Delia  was among the guests  when Victoria’s Minister for Roads and Ports, the Hon Tim Palls MP, carried out the official opening ceremony.

The Clayton station is a jointly funded project between Monash and the State Government and provides a range of amenities for cyclists such as change rooms, showers and security.

It is funded under the Local Area Access program (LAAP) – a scheme that provides funding for small scale infrastructure projects that aim to improve walking, cycling and public transport within the community.

The station is the first facility of its kind outside a CBD area in Australia.  Meanwhile,  similar style cycling facilities are being considered through the maasterplan process at all other Victorian campuses

Paul  Barton, Director of tOES, said improving the experience for those cycling to Monash was paramount to the design of the station. He said : “Staff and students may wish to cycle to work, but without adequate showering facilities or a secure place to store their bike, they may be reluctant to do so.

“To encourage cycling to Clayton , the station features secure and weather protected bicycle parking spaces as well as showers and adjacent private change areas, lockers that have adequate space to hang business attire, toilet facilities and a drinking fountain.”
