Major changes to Clayton campus Ring Road

The Ring Road around the Clayton campus has undergone some major sustainable changes.  Click here to see a plan of the works.

In order to provide an easier and  safer pedestrian and cyclist environment the Ring Road has been reduced to one car lane either direction on the north and east side of the campus.  This allows for the expansion of the  bicycle lanes on eather sider of the road.  Vic Roads assisted  with the design of the bicycle lanes and has approved the works.

The bike lane on the Eastern Ring Road stretches from the roundabout at Normanby Rd to the crossing opposite Sir Robert Blackwood Hall.  On the Northern Ring Road the lane stretches from the roundabout at the Eastern Ring Road to the roundabout near the N1 multi-level carpark.

There are some road laws that will need to be taken into consideration for drivers using the Ring Road:

  • Pedestrians and cyclists have right of way
  • Vehicles may travel in the bicycle lanes for up to 50 metres when:
    • entering or leaving the road
    • avoiding an obstruction or turning vehicle
    • turning left from the Ring Road
  • Vehicles must avoid driving on the continuous painted islands that separates cyclist and car traffic travelling in the same direction (such as much of the Northern Ring Road)

The Office of Environmental Sustainability will be conducting an ongoing review of the impact of the bike lanes.
