Monash Cleans Out and Cleans Up
After the overwhelming success of last years Office Clean-Out program the Office of Environmental Sustainability decided to run a second event during the Mid-year Break. Because an unexpectedly large volume of quality items were collected last year the event this year focused much more heavily on reusing the collected items.
Old and broken items were still recycled appropriately, only this year all quality furniture items were stored for reuse. Once the items were collected and sorted they were then offered back to the university’s departments and schools. Of the 350 furniture items collected for reuse, 241 were collected and reused within the university. It is estimated that the purchase price of these items would have been more than $50,000 resulting in great savings for Monash!
The left over items are now being offered to local charities, with the Hurstbridge Fire Relief Centre taking over 50 filing cabinets for victims of the February’s bushfires.
Hopefully the success of these events demonstrates how a structured onsite furniture store could not only provide ongoing benefit to the university but also help to build stronger meaningful relationships with local charities and schools.
