PC-faxing Demonstrates Monash’s Green Credentials

This month marks a significant milestone for the carbon reduction effort at Monash with the successful completion of the Monash Fax Project, implemented by the Integrated Collaboration Environment (ICE) Program.

The Monash Fax project has replaced the traditional paper-based faxing method – directly aligning with Monash’s commitment to environmental sustainability and providing a great boost to the Monash Green IT Strategy.

According to ICE Program Business Analyst Richard Robinson, PC-faxing now equates for 85 percent of faxing across Monash campuses in Victoria.

Estimates from Monash University’s Office for Environmental Sustainability indicate that the reduction in paper may be close to 110,000 pages per year – translating to roughly 2.7 tonnes of paper or 35 trees.  This is because per month, on average, Monash sends out approximately 8,000 A4-pages worth of faxes, while receiving 10,000 pages in-bound – all of which can now be stored electronically.

“The recommendation is that emailed faxes do not get printed out, but instead are transferred to a document management system such as TRIM, or alternatively stored on a shared drive,” said Richard Robinson.

In an additional boost to the environmentally-friendly credentials of PC-faxing, the majority of redundant fax machines have been recycled via the range of options recommended at the Recycling at Monash website.

This supplements the recycling of Monash’s legacy PABX telephones – part of the ICE Program’s ongoing Voice over IP (VoIP) Project – where redundant telephone units are sent to an external organisation to be broken down into the major components of plastic housing, copper wiring and circuit boards which are then recycled. .
