Victorians should look out for online scams targeting would-be renters in Melbourne, Consumer Affairs Minster Tony Robinson has warned.
Mr Robinson said Consumer Affairs Victoria had received several complaints about online rental scams.
"In each case, the perpetrators claimed they were overseas and asked renters to send payment for the Melbourne property in advance," he said.
Mr Robinson said consumers should never send money overseas to people they did not know.
"I urge any prospective tenant to ensure the property on offer is legitimate before signing lease agreements and parting with their money."
He said those behind the new property scam gave detailed descriptions of the property for rent and an explanation as to their whereabouts.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has recently released data showing nearly one in three Australians were exposed to scams in 2007.
"People are their own best protection against scams. Never give out money or personal details to anyone you don't know or trust and always be wary of sending money overseas," Mr Robinson said.
