A message from Stephen Davey, Divisional Director, Facilities and Services

Important security message from Victoria Police and Monash University Campus Security.
Victoria Police has warned that students, particularly those from overseas, have become the target of robbery while using public transport.
Money and personal belongings like iPODS and mobile phones have been stolen.
Most of the attacks have taken place outside normal peak travel times when few people are around. Most have occurred in the vicinity of bus and tram stops and railways stations.
Although several arrests have been made in recent weeks incidents are still being reported.
If you use public transport you are encouraged to develop a safety plan to help you react promptly, clearly and confidently in a threatening situation.
You are urged to consider the following:
Travel with a friend or in a group
Wait in well-lit and clearly visible areas
Carry a phone card, spare change or a mobile phone pre-programmed with emergency numbers including campus security.
Observe the environment and people around you. Look for places where you can seek assistance if necessary, such as police stations, shops and cafes.
Know the names of the streets you are travelling along.
Consider the area around you and choose the route you feel most comfortable with.
Should you experience any threatening behaviour you should contact police as soon as possible. Campus security and other university services should also be contacted for appropriate assistance and support.
