Crime Prevention

Crime Prevention

Mr Craig Mentiplay is the The Crime Prevention Coordinator. This role is part of the university security advisory office and works with campus security services, police and local community prevention practitioners to promote initiatives across all Victorian campuses. Craig regularly addresses staff and students to help build a greater awareness of safety and security issues.

The Crime Prevention Coordinator also helps departments address potential security issues in their own areas and provides guidance on security related safety within the workplace.

The role of the Crime Prevention Coordinator is to educate, encourage and facilitate students, staff members and visitors to participate in a partnership approach to crime prevention. The Crime Prevention Coordinator forges this partnership by providing specialist information to police members, students, staff members and visitors. The Crime Prevention Coordinator is also proactive in identifying crime problems and students, staff members and visitors needs, and developing crime prevention and safety programs to reduce identified crime trends.

Crime Prevention initiatives

The Crime Prevention Coordinator's duties and responsibilities are:

  • Responsible for the running of Campus Watch
  • Continuing to develop and provide campus crime profiles
  • Maintain Australian and Monash University crime prevention data, research and practice to guide the ongoing development of crime and violence prevention strategies
  • Undertaking comprehensive mapping of crime and violence prevention for the six Victorian campuses
  • Inform program development and cross sharing of ideas on what works in crime and violence prevention;
  • Staff, students and visitors information and education campaigns to promote awareness of issues and provide information about concrete steps people can take in their daily lives to reduce the risk of becoming a victim and particularly to reduce the risk of re-victimisation.

Provide training in Cash Handling/Arm Robbery, Duress Alarm, Handling Aggressive Customers, Switchboard/Call Centre Crisis Management and other various security information sessions to ensure the University community is kept abreast of the latest crime prevention strategies.

Personal Safety

Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure whilst at work or in a lecture theatre or study area, or when required to walk about the campus, whether it be during the day or at night. We should all give serious consideration to having a plan of action if required to deal with a situation which puts our safety at risk.

Your personal safety plan

Having your own individual Safety Plan means thinking about what action you would take if faced with various situations which may occur on campus. To formulate a plan it may help to discuss its content with Services, work or classmates or relatives or friends. It is important that you settle on a plan of action which suits you.

  • It is dangerous to assume it won't happen to me.
  • The time taken in planning ahead is time well spent.
  • Feel confident and comfortable with the fact that it makes perfect sense to ask for help if your safety is put at risk.
  • It may well be of comfort to develop your own list of contacts you feel safe with for advice or assistance.

Should you or your area have a safety issue you would like to discuss, then get in touch with your local campus security office or contact the Crime Prevention Coordinator for advice. Craig.Mentiplay@adm.monash.edu.au
