Parking Permit Policy for Staff
Policy statement and broad overview
For use by all university staff and staff of entities controlled by the university.
Monash University provides car parking at the majority of its Australian campuses and other work locations. In most cases, provision of car parking is on a fee-for-service basis either through designated permit parking areas or use of casual parking meters.
Where permit parking is available, staff are able to purchase such permits on an annual basis.
It is university policy that university funds are not to be used to pay for these permits even if the permit is required for a university or controlled entity vehicle that is authorised for private use.
Policy details
Staff who require a parking permit (as opposed to using casual meter parking) for their campus of usual occupation are required to pay for these permits irrespective of whether the permit is required for a university or private vehicle. Colour coded permits available are green (VC, DVCs and Deans), red (all other staff) and blue (staff and students).
The only exception to the requirement for staff to purchase their own permits is for yellow car parking permits. These may be purchased by cost centres only for visiting or occasional car parking by university or private vehicles. These permits are not to be used by staff for regular or frequent parking requirements. University vehicles carrying the university "badge" or "decal" are entitled to park in yellow permit spaces without the need for a yellow car parking permit.
Arrangements for the purchase of car parking permits will be publicised (by global email) by the Facilities & Services Division, normally in the period September to December each year.
Where it is tax effective to do so (ie does not incur a fringe benefits tax liability), the university will endeavour to offer salary packaging arrangements for staff to assist them in paying for car parking permits.
Under no circumstances are departments, cost centres or any university controlled entity to use university or entity funds to pay for university car parking permits, other than yellow permits as outlined above.
