Walking is important

Physical activity is good for your health. The best form of physical activity is that which can be built into daily life as habitual activity and walking is the easiest and most accessible to all. If you are trying to improve your health and fitness, walking is an excellent idea. Walking is the most popular form of physical activity. Nearly everyone can walk, whether it is as a mode of travel, for fitness, weight loss or relaxation. Walking is fun, free and social.

By doing just 30 minutes of walking a day, you will be on the way to improving your health and fitness. If you can't set aside 30 minutes at once, break it up into 2 x 15 minutes walks or even 3 x 10 minute walks a day instead. Making walking part of your daily activities is easy - start a walking group at lunchtime, walk to get your lunch, take the stairs instead of the lift, or walk to your local shops instead of using your car.

It is important to remember that some activity in your daily life is better than none, and more activity is better than a little. When starting out it is important to begin slowly and gradually build up your daily steps. If walking long distances, take it slowly at first - it will become easier as your fitness improves and you will be surprised at how easy it is to walk around your local area.

Environmental & community benefits

Walking and cycling reduce traffic congestion on roads and also reduces related local air pollution. More people out on the street also improves community safety by acting as an informal neighbourhood watch.
