Why is my Transport choice important?

The transport choices of Monash's staff, students and visitors impacts on a number of areas.

Environment

Monash is rightly committed to reducing its impact on the Earths fragile ecosystems. By taking steps to reduce our reliance on the car we will significantly reduce our greenhouse emissions.

Social Justice

Providing effective alternative transport options to participate at Monash is an important social justice issue as it alleviates the need for expensive car ownership from vulnerable students and staff.

Land Use

Acquiring new land is very difficult. Monash must allocate its available space to many different uses. Each space provided for a car (at a cost of about $14,000 each) denies that space for a new laboratory or lecture hall - our core business.

Future proofing

With a heavy reliance on cars, Monash is becoming increasingly exposed to variables outside its control such as higher oil prices, potential climate change legislation and increased traffic congestion.
